Year 5/6 Tennis Tournament Success !

November 29, 2017

Southmead’s success, this term, at Year 2 and Year 3/4 tennis tournaments, for primary schools in North Devon, has continued even further with a fantastic performance by six talented children from Years 5 and 6 at their recent corresponding tournament held at the Tarka Tennis Centre.

At the event, Harry Hebard (Year 6), Ed Cork (Year 6), Olly Latu (Year 5), Reuben Jones (Year 6), Jess Cardew (Year 6) and Henry Jones (Year 6) played in pairs within three pools of the six-pool competition.

In Pool C, Jess and Henry gave a fantastic performance during the ‘group’ stage by comfortably winning four of their matches against pairs from West Buckland, Berrynarbour, Georgeham and Woolacombe, and losing their only game to Ilfracombe ‘C’ by just three points.

Not to be surpassed by this success, Harry and Ed, in Pool ‘A’, won three of their four games against Woolacombe, Our Ladies and West Down and, again, lost their only game by three points (Kingsacre).

In Pool ‘B’, however, Reuben and Olly proved even more successful by winning all five of their games against Combe Martin, West Buckland, Georgeham, Berrynarbour and Goodleigh respectively, dropping only 16 points along the way.

As a result of the group stage successes, all three pairs made it through to the semi-final stage, where their Pool was paired with one other. Despite great team work, Jess and Henry narrowly lost both their semi-final against Ilfracombe and 3rd place play-off game against Our ladies, finishing in 4th place; a fantastic result. Harry and Ed also lost their semi-final, this time against West Buckland but showed real resilience to overcome their disappointment and beat Woolacombe in their 3rd place play-off, so winning themselves a creditable bronze medal each. Motivated by their team mates’ performances, Reuben and Olly were determined to do even better and in their semi-final they gritted their teeth to beat Kingsacre ‘B’ 10-6. This resulted in a place in the final where they faced a pair from Ilfracombe. The game was competitively fought but the Southmead pair displayed amazing team work and came through to beat their opponents by 10 points to 7 to make themselves gold medallists!

We would like to say a huge thank you to Matt Cardew, our parent lead for the event and Nicola Schofield who helped to transport the children to the venue and help look after them on the day. We are unable to attend these events without such parental support. Well done to all six children who represented Southmead. The pride on their faces when they returned to school was priceless. What a brilliant way to end the final sporting event of the year!
