School Games Mark: a glittering award for Southmead!

September 7, 2018

After our fantastic achievement last year, in being awarded Silver in the prestigious School Games Mark accreditation scheme, we are absolutely thrilled to tell you that, for the first time ever, Southmead has been awarded School Games Mark Gold!

This brilliant award celebrates Southmead’s outstanding commitment to school sport.

The School Games Mark is a Government-led awards scheme which rewards schools for their commitment to the development of sports competition across their school and into the community.

It is a retrospective award which celebrates success over the previous academic year. It is very valuable to the school, as OfSTED can use the Mark award as part of their PE inspection framework.

However we wouldn’t have received it without such a brilliant team effort from everyone involved in school sport at Southmead, over the past year. So we would like to thank all of our wonderful class teachers for leading and inspiring in PE and for offering such a wide range of active after-school clubs, our amazing children for taking part in competitions during lessons, at Sports Day, against other schools, and at regional and county events, and our brilliant parents for encouraging their children to get involved in school sport and for helping with competitions and at several of our after school clubs. We would also like to pay tribute to two particular parents for their help and support throughout the year: Matt Cardew and Sarah Nicholls went to and led Southmead’s attendance at a large number of sporting events last year. Without the generous help they provided we (and the children) could not have attended many of those events. Matt also ran our very successful cricket club, coaching the children to success in the Braunton cricket tournament. Sadly we must say goodbye to Matt this year, as his daughter has now left Southmead, so we are currently looking for other parents who would like to explore a similar role*. Sarah Nicholls is also our brilliant PE Governor and she has consistently supported and championed the development of PE and sports, both at our regular PE coordination meetings and at Governor meetings: thank you for all of your help and support, Sarah! We would like to thank our magnificent office team who help us prepare for events and remind us when we forget to submit entries/book coaches/complete risk assessments/prepare registers. Thank you for your patience! And we would also like to thank our departing Headteacher, Gill Gillett, for her vision in encouraging and supporting the school in all our sporting endeavours … and we look forward to continuing our improvement and sharing our successes with our new Headteacher, Nick Plumb, who has already provided the sparkling new trophy cabinet which is now in the foyer. And finally we would like to thank Angelique Sayer (PE lead at the Academy and Braunton Learning Community School Sports Coordinator), and Adrian Avery (School Games Organiser for North Devon), both for organising many of the events that we attend and for their help throughout the year, supporting very many aspects of our PE work, all of which contributes to the School Games Mark application.

What a team! Thank you all!

Dr Corney & Mrs Priddis.

* If you are interested in becoming a Parent leader, helping us coordinate and attend smaller sporting events throughout the coming year, and would like to discuss this further, please ask to see either Dr Corney or Mrs Priddis.
