Welcome to Southmead Primary School from Mr Nicholas Plumb (Headteacher).

We are a friendly, caring school with our pupils at the centre of everything we do. Situated in North Devon, we take pride in the beautiful area we live in and make the most of our local environment, working with the local community wherever possible. As a result, our children have fun and enjoy the broad and balanced curriculum we offer, whether it be on a school visit to Exmoor, ensuring our children can swim (considering the local beaches) or singing within the community. There are a wide selection of clubs including football, choir, STEM and tennis amongst a few!

With an ‘all in it together attitude’, we pride ourselves on working closely with parents, carers, pupils and of course, the local community. This has been highlighted yet further with our core school values – RESPECT, which were established after consultations with staff, pupils, parents and governors.

Respect - Equality - Self-confidence - Perseverance - Enjoyment - Curiosity - Trust

I sincerely hope that this provides a flavour of our fantastic school. However to see, feel and breathe our passion for education and providing the best opportunities for all of our pupils, please come and visit us!

Please refer to our Latest News page to see wonderful pictures and updates about what our children, staff and school have been experiencing.

Mr Plumb

R – Respect. We respect each other and the opinions we have and share. We earn the respect of each other. We respect our school, our resources and the world we live in.

E – Equality. We treat each other as equals. We do not discriminate against anyone and reflect upon their views and opinions. We ensure everyone can access high quality learning.

S – Self-Confidence. We build confidence in our pupils’ own ability through teaching and discussion. We ensure our children know there are no silly questions and that others are probably thinking the same question. We ensure our children are praised for achieving their best.

P – Perseverance. Everyone is encouraged to keep going, especially when they find something difficult. Our lessons focus on learners being able to apply their knowledge to solve other problems even when they think they can’t do it. We instil a ‘can do’ attitude.

E – Enjoyment. We ensure children are happy and enjoy school. We have a dedicated Pastoral and Safeguarding team who have the time to listen to children no matter how small their issues – it is huge to them! Our teaching, playtimes and lunchtimes ensure we provide the best opportunities for our children to have fun!

C – Curiosity. We encourage children to ask questions. We want to further and challenge their understanding as we prepare them for their lives ahead and jobs that have not yet been created. We want children to enjoy their learning as they want to find out more!

T – Trust. We want trust to be at the forefront of our teaching. Trusting children to be honest and work through issues. We want pupils and parents to trust that we are providing the best education for their children. We want our children to trust us with their smallest and biggest worries and know we can help!
